PART 2: COUNTERSINKING THE MOUNTING HOLE

Countersinking the mounting hole is as easy as crossing the street. It requires no special skills or experience, but like crossing the street, you have to be EXTREMELY CAREFUL. You don't want to drill a 1/4" hole through the top of your guitar.

Use a 1/4" brad point bit. The brad point creates a hole with a much flatter bottom than a standard bit with a conical tip. They're available at any hardware store cheap.

Center your bit on hole A and then CAREFULLY drill hole B PART WAY THROUGH THE BRIDGE. The mounting hole will try to "suck" your bit through the top so start the hole slowly. Once the hole is approximately 1/8" deep. Twist the chuck that holds the bit by hand. A sharp bit will quickly remove enough wood with three or four twists. The object is to drill enough space for the screwhead and the pearl inlay dot which covers it. Usually, this is slightly less than 1/4" of depth. Try to leave as much bridge wood as you can get away with.
